Rotary Angel Ring Saves the Life of Young Boy in American Samoa (July 12, 2012)

Published on July 23, 2012 by in Uncategorized

The Rotary Club of Pago Pago in American Samoa has placed Angel Rings in certain villages along its shores where often rough seas pound the shores and lava cliffs. One of these villages is Vaitogi, on the western side of American Samoa. Youngsters swimming in the village of Vaitogi ran into trouble when a young boy was washed out to sea on Thursday afternoon, July 12, 2012. His older brother swam out to try to save him, he is still missing. Rotary also places a bell that accompanies each Angel Ring, it was rung, alerting the village that someone was in trouble. The Angel Ring was credited to saving the younger brother’s life. Someone tossed the angel ring out to the boy, and he was able to make it safely back to shore using the floater. Unfortunately, there is no hope of finding his brother who was swept out into the rough seas. The Rotary Club of Pago Pago began installing the Angel Rings in the territory about five or six years ago following several incidences of drowning along our rugged coast. We got the idea from an Australian Rotary Club who also wanted to give people a fighting chance of surviving in the water until help arrived. The Rotary Club of Pago Pago has thus far installed six rings at strategic villages, the Club has requested villages that are interested to please contact the Rotary Club of Pago Pago. The U.S. Coast Guard has generously donated rings to our Rotary Club to set up more Angel Rings around the island.
