President Jackie Y. announced that the Tsunami Anniversary Service will be held at the Rotary Tsunami Park Shelter on Sat., Sept. 29, 2012, with a Club cleanup of both picnic shelters on Sat., Sept. 22, 2012. The times for these events will be announced this coming week. We had a great guest speaker on Fri., Rob Shaffer, author of the historical fiction Samoa, telling the history of Samoa through the story telling art of other great historical fiction telling the story of Hawaii. You can buy the book Samoa from any of Terry Steffany’s stores at the airport or at Fagaima on the airport road. Pursuant to the By-Laws of the Rotary Club of Pago Pago, the grace period for consideration of the application of Margie Tafiti has passed and she will inducted upon her return to American Samoa. Congratulations Margie! We look forward to other new members and ask everyone to invite potential members to fellowship with our Club. In support of the Lion’s Club, Rotary will sponsor a team and participate in supporting the Lion’s Club as one of our community service organizations. It is a three member team and Joe Y. , our Golf Captain will select the other two members. The Rotary Calendar 2013 is at the print shop and will be published and distributed to club members and to other corporate sponsors.
President Jackie Y. presiding at today’s meeting and Danny E. was Sgt.@Arms. President Jackie reported n the FEMA Workshop she attended to represent the Rotary Club of Pago Pago regarding the Tsunami Preparedness Study that was done by a joint partnership of federal and government agencies. To review the plan, log on to: www.astsunamiresilience.org . Board member Bill M. announced that the Montessori Pre-school playground has been ordered and is on its way to Am. Samoa. Thanks Bill for all you hard work ing getting this project moving forward. The Club will put up a sign at the Arrivals Baggage area at the Pago Pago International Airport to showcase the Rotary Club of Pago Pago, with information for time, day and location of fellowship meeting (12:15 p.m., Friday, Sadie’s Inn (Happy Valley), Pago Pago, Am. Samoa for $500 a year and it was discussed to donate a Christmas Tree for the arrival area as we did last year to reduce the price of the annual rental fee. Rotary Club will be a sponsor for the Vaitogi scenic lookout, near the location of the Rotary Angel Ring in Vaitogi Village. Signs will be posted to “Keep Vaitogi
Congratulations to the FAMM Youth Group for giving Rotary Club Pres. Jackie Y. and Sec. Roy H. to cleanup the Turtle & Shark scenic lookout in Vaitogi Village. The group efforts yielded two truck loads with 40 bags of trash and 8 boxes of beer bottles. The trash wash was properly disposed of in ASPA trash bins and the bottles were taken to ASPA recycling to be crushed and recycled. The Rotary Club of Pago Pago is looking to establish an island wide cleanup the roadsides and partner with different organizations, youth clubs and government agencies to adopt a village and/or a roadway for regular cleanup. Also, to promote in the media to “Keep American Samoa Clean” and to work with the American Samoa Visitors Bureau to develop tourism by showcasing the beauty of the islands without all the roadside trash. Again, a big Than You to Pastor Sam Utunoa and the FAMM Youth Group! Checkout and support their President Lyndon Johnson Air Force One project to build a full sizreplica of the Boeing 707 that was the first commissioned Air Force One used by President Johnson and which he flew to Am. Samoa.
At our regular fellowship meeting on Fri. Aug. 20th, Pres. Jackie Y. presented the approved budget from the Board meeting (see post on Board Meeting 8/15/12). Bill M. informed the club that he ordered the Christmas trees and that he was able to arrange for 50 cents to fumigate each tree. Discussion to have Rotary publish a 2013 Calendar and Billy Y. volunteered to spearhead this project and report by the next Board meeting (Sept. 5) the list of sponsors, deadline, photos and budget. Joe W. proposed and will arrange a tour of the new Gov. Tauese Sunia Ocean Center that recently opened by NOAA. Member USCG Lt. Steve Caskey announced that he will be living Am. Samoa for his new duty assignment in the U.S.A. and he showed his honor and bought his Rotary Badge for $100. The fining session was lively and good fellowship. The Queen of Hearts was not pulled by Steve C. and the game of chance continues for another week. We had 11 members in attendance.
Rotary Club of Pago Pago working with Origin Energy to Install Solar & Gas Water Heaters for Hope House
Origin Energy General Manager Richard Young has donated two Solar & Gas Water Heaters for Hope House. The Club will assist Origin with the installation costs. Hope House CEO David Robinson has expressed his sincere appreciation to Origin Energy and to the Rotary Club of Pago Pago for continuing to provide assistance to Hope House. Installation is scheduled within the next 2 weeks. Update 8-26-12.
The Rotary Club of Pago Pago Board of Directors met on Aug. 15, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. and adjourned at 6:30 p.m. Attendance: Presiding Jackie Y., Roy H., Bill M., Tom D., Joe W., Joe Y. and Peter C. A project budget of $4,000 was established for the Onososopo Park The Club will begin advertising at the Airport, in the newspapers and on the CableTV informational Channels, subject to cost of same. John R. , Dennis W. and Jackie Y. will followup with Samoa News, Channel 13 Cable and the airport. The Club will establish a fixed budget amount for shelter boxes and other funds for International disasters. The Club will consider helping the Humane Society project to neuter and spade the pets. No budget established for this at this time. Origin Energy GM Richard Young has donated two Gas Solar water heaters and they will be donated to Hope House. Origin Energy will do the installation and the Club will cover the minor costs to have the units installed (est. $500).
