ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MEETING MINUTES 1.31.14

Present: Incoming President Abe Utu Malae, Treasurer Jim Mahoney, Joe Yandall, Billy Young, Margie Tafiti, Tom Drabble, Steve Watson, Joe Weilenman, Mike Benson, Joe Davis-Fleming, Roy Hall,, Bill Maxey, Lenita Pritchard, Terese Salumbides, Will Sword Minutes of Meeting 1/24 read and passed. Swimming Pool President Dennis has sent proposal for Swimming Pool to Lina for funding. Abe said DOC will be meeting in 2 weeks. Tom will look for a manufacturer who might be able to supply all parts for swimming pool ie: pipe engineering, pumps, play equipment, etc. Jim advised us that we have $145,000 in swimming pool fund. Abe asked if we had a back up plan if this funding didn’t come through. Billy mentioned that Soccer has 3 million dollar funding coming in from FIFA for a multiple sports facility and 7 million after that. Suggested we talk to them to get more info and if swimming might be included. Abe will talk to Faivae who is the President of the Soccer Association. Abe mentioned if American Samoa Development Authority had any funding? Dictionary Jim happy with dictionary progress. We have our next presentation at Leone Midkiff Tuesday morning. Inviting any and all members to attend. Peter is getting books for Manua and will try schedule that when his boat makes a trip over. Golf Tournament Sold books are starting to come in. We were donated a 50″ TV from Ace hardware and have a dishwasher from past Rotary tournament which we will have a separate raffle for. 1000 tickets at $2.00. Feb 8th Roy and crew will set up at ACE to sell ball drop tickets and raffle tickets upon approval from ACE management and a second crew at CUL. Jim M. will check with ACE. ROTARY CLUB DICTIONARY PROJECT FOR 3RD GRADERS A GREAT SUCCESS!

The Dictionary Project distribution is going well.  So far, we have presented 520 dictionaries at 4 of the largest schools. Tomorrow three (3) schools are scheduled:   196 Books. Thur.  Jan 30th   Matafao Elementary, Faga’alu,         0830   86 books Thur   Jan 30th   Coleman Elementary,  Pago Pago,   0930   95 books Thur   Jan  30th  Le’atele  Elementary,  Fagasa,         1030   15 books If you can make the time please join us tomorrow at all or one of the above schools.

Everyone was asked to participate in the Dictionary projects. Raffle Books were passed out. If you didn’t receive your 9 books please see Leni or call 733-5536. Reminders: Pass out your solicitaion letters and sell your raffle books please. If you have trouble getting rid of raffle books after a hard effort to do so please return them back to me or pass on to another willing Rotarian. Also, Roy sent out Golf Tournament tasks…please work on your tasks and report status back to Roy or Will. Thank you all for all your hard work. Keep it up and once again we will be guranteed another successful tournament. Dennis and the swimming pool committee were to hold a meeting at Joe Weilenmans house after Rotary meeting. CHRISTMAS DINNER A MERRY TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!

Present: President Dennis Welborn, Vice President Utu Malae, Treasurer Jim Mahoney, Billy Young, Lenita Pritchard, Peter Crispin, Margie Tafiti, Terese Salumbide, Joe Davis Fleming, Joe Yandall, Joe Weilenman, Jason Pritchard, Bill Maxey, Steve Watson, Mike Benson, Jim Bacon, Rven Garcia, Tom Drabble Also present were members spouses, friends and family which made it a very nice turnout. Thank you Dennis for organizing a wonderful evening. We had a fantastic band, nice christmas caroling and also managed to get some dancing in. Jim Mahoney updated us on the christmas tree sales which went very well. We sold out almost immediately and are talking about possibily ordering an extra 30 to 50 next year. Betty and I put on a bbq for the agriculture boys, Ana, Margie and Jim on the last day as a thank you for all their hard work and had a few diet cokes with them. Friday morning we set up and decorated the large tree we donated to Airport arrival area. Looks very nice! A special thank you also goes out to Bill Maxey for all his work in organizing and ordering the trees year after year. Thank you again Peter Crispin for the use of the Tool Shop and power. A special mention was also said at meeting for all that Hamburg Sud has done for Rotary. Bill’s personal computer Tom Drabble came up with a rough estimate of their donation throughout the years. Faafetai Tele I believe is going into the papers for them. A few celebrations also that evening. Danytra Young turned 21, Jim and Ana celebrated their 31st Anniversary and Mrs. Bacon also celebrated a birthday. Dinner: Don’t know about you guys but my dinner was fantastic. ROTARY MEETING OCT 25, 2013

Present: President Dennis Wellborn, Lenita Pritchard, Billy Young, Peter Crispin, Margie Tafiti, Chris Bullinger, Hobbs Lowson, Joe Weilanman, Tom Drabble, Jim Bacon, Joe Davis Fleming, Guest: Valerie Lowson Thank you Peter for the DYK and Dennis for the joke! Jim Bacon did a nice presentation on his trip as a Rotarian GSE to Australia in 2008 with his friend “YORO” the Yosemite Bear. Thank you Jim for that. Dennis passed around a letter from Rotary to donate to Tasman fire in Australia as well as school fire in Rarotonga. Bill Maxey advised that we have 5 large trees coming this year. # normally go to BOH, Moana-o-Sina and Airport. Need to advertise the other two. Rotary was faxed a invoice from Holiday Tree farm for internal freight for $1300. Dennis to approach treasurer to waive 5% duty. Suggested by members worth the try although he has put a stop to non profit organizations getting waivers. Motion put forth by Hobbs to raise the tree cost to $65.00 to cover these unforseen expenses. Seconded by Bill. Passed. Tom Atkinsons last Rotary meeting. Tom, thank you for all you have done for Rotary. You joined us late and are leaving us early to join your family in Alaska but have left us with fond memories of your commitment and support for Rotary. Bon Voyage ma ia manuia lou malaga! DG WILLARD MARTIN TO VISIT AM. SAMOA ON NOV.6&7, 2013

10-12-13 Hello, It appears that Willard Martin will be visiting Apia during their Melbourne Cup program to be held on November 5th. He would like to come to American Samoa for his visit on Wednesday and Thursday of that week, our November 6th & 7th. We will need to have a Board meeting on Wednesday evening then the normal weekly meeting on Thursday afternoon before he flies out. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend both functions. Minutes of Meeting, October 04, 2013 Present: President Dennis Wellborn, IPP Jackie Young, Treasurer Jim Mahoney, Lenita Pritchard, Billy Young, Peter Crispin, Margie Tafiti, ROTY Roy Hall, Jason Pritchard, Rven Garcia, Steve Watson, Chris Bullinger, Will Sword, Joe Weilenman, Joe Yandall, Tom Drabble, Sargent Tom Atkinson Guest: Celestine Nicks Our guest speaker was Celestine Nicks who gave us a very informative talk on Human and Social Services Programs which cover Childwelfare Advocacy, Abused and neglected children, emotional and sexually affected women, Adoption and Foster care, battered women which also involves the neighboring islands as well. They have a shelter for victims under 18 who Chris Bullinger will be presenting Rotary dictionaries to. They currently have 8 clients who all differ in age. The youngest is a 2 year old disabled infant who they have been trying to get into Hope House but unfortunately this child is on a waiting list. ROTY Roy Hall mentioned that he had in the past help get a young child admitted into Hope House and that if there is any way Rotary can be of assistance to let him know. She thanked Rotary for their interest in wanting to help with the shelter by offering DVDs, TV’s etc but says that they are well equipped. If anyone would like to donate what they could do with is laundry soap, diapers, wipes, etc. Jim Mahoney suggested she make contact with Ronald McDonald Homes to see if they could be of any help to her program. Chris reported that he had a discussion with Bill Haleck, Director of Public Safety regarding Youth and Women who handle the Juvenile program. He will also be meeting with Roy Asuega and Mara Brown with Youth and Womens Affairs and will be donating dictionaries to them this Friday. A big Thank

TSUNAMI REMEMBRANCE SERVICE, SAT., SEPT. 28, TSUNAMI SHELTER PARK

The Rotary Club of Pago Pago and Hawaiian Air joined ASG Human Social Services and family members, friends and guests at the Rotary Club & Hawaiian Air Tsunami Family Park Shelter to remember family members and friends that were victims of the Tsunami that struck Am. Samoa on Sept. 29, 2009. The attendance was well represented by over 200 family, friends and guests. Rotary Corporate sponsors provide lunch for all those that attended the service.     Talanei News Report Posted: Monday, 30 September 2013 8:27AM Hawaiian Air & Rotary Club memorial Lyons Park was the venue for another memorial for tsunami victims.  Singing, sharing, donations and words of consolation were all part of a special tsunami memorial shelter fellowship sponsored by the Hawaiian Airline, the Rotary Club of Pago Pago with the support of the ASG’s Department of Parks and Recreation last Saturday at the Lyon’s Park in Tafuna. The event marked the 4th year anniversary of the earthquake-triggered tsunami which tragically claimed 34 lives in American Samoa and hundreds in neighboring Samoa. One of the highlights of the special ceremony was the presentation by the One Global Family’s Founder and CEO, Mrs. Laura Ava Tesimale and its partners, the Samoa Victim Support Group & Give Light Foudation. More than ten children whose parents died in the 2009 tsunami recieved checks of $200 each to help with  their education. Representing the American Samoa Government and speaking on behalf of the Governor was DHSS Director Taeaoafua Dr. Meki Solomona who emotionally recollected his memories of the morning of September 29, 2009. He described making a stop at Sadies by the Sea on his way to work for some coffee when the earth shook. He said that when the tremor shook for more than 20 seconds he knew what was going to happen. He

Many applicants but Rotary has an actual plan on hand which is a plus. Public Works to put in storm drains so will need to make adjustments to plan. They will hold a meeting when Director gets back. Dictionary Jim has ordered dictionaries and they may be released early.Internal shipping costs included. Bill to organize shipping to AS. Hope House All items ordered. To be shipped down by ICS. X-Mas Trees Bill Maxey has ordered X-Mas trees which are scheduled to arrive Nov. 24th. Calendar Billy advises calendar now ready for marketing. If everyone could do their bit in buying or selling some calendars to friends or businesses. 4500 calendars to sell. Already sold 1500.
